Pine and spruce are readily available soft wood found in the southwest Colorado region, they are a low density wood that splits and burns easily. Pine and spruce are known for being quick drying, therefore seasoning time is reduced significantly. Because pine and spruce are a soft wood it does not burn as hot and therefore is easier to control the heat produced. Spruce is also wonderful for home use because it is not a heavy smoke producer. 

 

Pine produces about 15.9 million BTU's per cord or about 100-150 gallons of fuel oil equivalent. Pine makes great kindling, it will burn very hot, and contains some sap. Pine can be messy, cut into smaller pieces outside if availability allows.

 

Spruce produces about 14.7million BTU's per cord or about 100-150 gallons of fuel oil equivalent.
